Milwaukee Brewers power up centre field resources with Nyjer Morgan
Things seem to be getting interesting for the Milwaukee Brewers, as the National League Central squad looks to make its mark on Major League Baseball this year. Their aim is simple - ‘Get to the Playoffs’. The team has already invested heavily in pitching,
and in a recent attempt brought in Nyjer Morgan from the Washington Nationals on a swap deal. The trade was made for minor league infielder, Cutter Dykstra at $50,000.
The move will aid the centre field position which is currently under Carlos Gomez’s control. The right hand outfield has the problem of losing focus and drifting off a bit. His stiff back in spring training may have instigated Morgan’s arrival. However,
in terms of getting cover the situation has improved now. The Brewers management seems pleased with the deal and general manager, Doug Melvin was upbeat over the situation.
"We view [Morgan] as a little more than an extra guy, but we told Carlos to just keep doing what he's doing," Melvin said. "Every day there's a new injury, and you have to protect yourself."
Morgan, however, left the Nationals for a particular reason. The player was unable to consistently settle into the team due to his temperament. His fiery temper has lead to trouble on the field in the past. Washington will be glad to get the negative attention
off their backs. The outfielder had been involved in a bench-clearing spar with the Florida Marlins in September, last year. He was subsequently suspended for eight games and slapped a $15,000 fine.
Nevertheless, the Brewers are stronger now and have the lineup to make a case for the National League title this year. Morgan has defensive attributes with an element of pinch hitting which he can provide to the team on the forefront.
"It makes us better," manager Ron Roenicke talked of the swap deal.
"We looked at it, made phone calls, did our due diligence," Melvin said. "All of the reports were that he is a good guy, an aggressive guy, and an emotional guy, but he's not a problem in the clubhouse."
Will this be Milwaukee’s year? The acquisitions during the offseason suggest it to be.
