Milwaukee Brewers prefer silence on hiring shortstop – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday opted for keeping discreet silence on the matter of hiring their shortstop for 2012. The biggest name that has popped up for the slot, however- quite interestingly, is that of New York Mets’ Jose Reyes.
Accomplishing another feat, Jose Reyes this year won the National League batting title, making him one of the most sought-after shortstops as he is currently a free-agent. The Milwaukee Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin, however, is disinclined to speak
about the matter.
If he discloses the names, Melvin believes, it will only add to the competitive disadvantage of the team. The Brewers, it is important to mention, have had the best of offence at their disposal throughout the year. Reyes, provided he becomes the part of
the team, will strengthen the side to the hilt.
But Melvin prefers staying strictly quiet about it.
"I don't like to tip my hand on any of this stuff," Melvin said via telephone from Phoenix, where he has been meeting with his pro scouts. "Somebody finds out you have interest in some guy, and somebody in your division steps up and gets him.”
Melvin said. "If they call up and say they have interest in your club, or you call up and say you have interest.”
On the other hand, Reyes’ agent Peter Greenberg also declined to comment on the nature of any talk that the shortstop has had recently on joining any team. With Yuniesky Betancourt gone, the Brewers will be looking for someone strong to replace him in the
shortstop.
Among other names that have emerged lately are Jimmy Rollins, Rafael Furcal, Clint Barmes, Jamey Carroll and Alex Gonzalez. But, on the face of it, Reyes remains the most alluring name that the Brewers may look to for strengthening their offence.
The Brewers success in 2011, whereby it made it to the playoffs, hinged a great deal on their ever improving offence. With the likes of Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun at their disposal, Jose Reyes if he comes part of the team will be an added advantage for
the Brewers.
