Milwaukee Brewers re-sign Nyjer Morgan – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers succeeded on Monday, January 16, in re-signing outfielder, Nyjer Morgan in a deal worth $2.35 million. The contract will include him in the list which the Brewers have not allowed to go into free-agency.
This arbitration-eligible player is considered to be one of the key members of the team and it was pretty likely that the team will retain him. Considering the fact that the likes of Prince Fielder has already gone, the team does not want to risk anything
when it comes to offence.
In the 119 games that Nyjer Morgan represented his team, his average stood at .304, which is quite amazing for the young player. That is the reason why the team did not allow him to go. The player scored 61 runs in his 378 at-bats which serve as an example
of how strong a player he is.
Among the list of players who have their names in the team’s list of supposed arbitration eligibility are Shaun Marcum and relievers Kameron Loe, Jose Veras and Francisco Rodriguez. Francisco comes across as someone special in this case.
"[Rodriguez] is in another world from our other cases, as far as determining what the proper number is," said Brewers’ senior director of business operations Teddy Werner, the club's arbitration guru.”
"There are a slew of comparables. You look at the setup men and closers who have signed in the last couple of years, and that is the universe of players we have been discussing with Scott. "Obviously, there is a difference of opinion at the moment about
where Francisco falls in that group."
With the 73 games that he played last season, he maintained an ERA of 2.64 as a closer, saving no less than 23 games for the Brewers. Similarly, even though he could not achieve this feat in the playoffs, he did retain an ERA of 1.80 which is considerably
good.
The changes that have been made now, it is expected that the Brewers will be able to keep both the offence and defence stronger so as to compete with rival teams in the upcoming regular season.
