Milwaukee Brewers reportedly sign Donnie Murphy to a minor-league deal – MLB News
With the onset of season, there were indications that the Milwaukee Brewers would not go for signing/trading any major piece. That precisely is the case so far.
The very fact that free-agent pitcher Zack Greinke was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers dropped a hint that the Brewers had no plans to go for major transactions.
Be that as it may, Zack Greinke is reported to have agreed to $158 million deal with Dodgers. The whole negotiation process was being curiously watched – so it seemed. For Trey Hillman, Greinke’s driving the whole process was a sign of intelligence of this
pitcher as well.
"I'm not surprised he was driving the process," said Hillman. "That's where Zack's intelligence comes in. He's going to set the course and he's going to drive it. I know he has an agent, but in this situation I'm sure he was the boss."
But keeping that aspect of the deal aside for now, what is important to note here is that the Brewers got Donnie Murphy on Monday, December 17 to a minor-league deal with an invitation to the spring training.
Mike Vassallo, Senior Director of Media Relations - Milwaukee Brewers, tweeted: “The
#Brewers have signed INF Donnie Murphy to a minor-league contract with an invitation to Major League camp. Team now has 7 NR invitees.”
The player comes with an experience. 29-year old Murphy has been with the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics and Miami Marlins for seven seasons. But as far as the batting average is concerned, along with on-base coupled with slugging percentages, the
player has not been up to the mark. In 52 games, he has held .216/.281/.379.
The player was outrighted to the minors after playing as shortstop, second baseman in the MLB. In the Spring Training here, Murphy will have a chance to set things right as he is to be brought in as a bench utility guy.
To be seen now is whether Murphy will be able to make most use of the opportunity coming his way. The Brewers, on the other hand, will be comfortable with the recent moves they have made given the limited number of options available to them.
