Milwaukee Brewers retain Rickie Weeks despite ankle problems – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers have decided to retain the second baseman Rickie Weeks for Game 5 of the National League Division Series. The Brewers are in for the series-decider as the team will confront the Arizona Diamondbacks with the series tied.
Rickie Weeks has not been able to swing his bat effectively since the start of the National League Division Series due largely to some problems with his ankle. It was back in July when Rickie Weeks had to go into the Disabled-list due to a sprained ankle.
Offensively, there has left a lot to be desired on Weeks’ part. A look at his previously seven days’ performance does not make a particularly overwhelming read. He has remained at-bat 15 times, having only one hit and an RBI with a 0.67 average.
For Ron Roenicke, the player may sparkle at any time despite the ankle problem. He prefers to keep the player in the roster until Weeks makes it known that he is not able to go ahead with hits.
"Unless he comes in and unless something is going on with the ankle that he would say, 'You know something, I'm really not close to 100 percent,' then maybe something would change," Roenicke said. "Those things are hard to do."
After contracting a sprained ankle, his performance, at best, has plummeted, if not touching its ebb. While he has a .067 average in the post-season games, in the regular season he had 453 at-bats, having 122 hits, 20 of which were home-runs and 49 RBIs.
He maintained an average of .269 in regular season.
"You guys still see the ankle, it isn't right. We knew it wouldn't be," Roenicke said. "But we were hoping offensively that he would get locked in and be able to really hold down that fifth spot, which we've talked about all year."
Despite the stats not favouring the player to the extent that they must, the fact that the team manger still reposes his confidence in Weeks shows he expects something extraordinary from his player in Friday’s game.
