Milwaukee Brewers steer clear of free-agent frenzy – MLB News
As the Winter Meetings wrapped up on Thursday, December 06, the Milwaukee Brewers did not have anything big to talk about on trade front. General manager Doug Melvin, however, had already dropped the hint that they would not get into free-agent frenzy.
The Brewers were looking for lefty relievers. But with the amount of money available, they might not get the kind of deal they sought. It was Randy Choate who got a three-year contract from the St. Louis Cardinals.
"We said we weren't going to get into the free-agent frenzy," Melvin said. "There's 37-year-old guys getting three-year contracts."
As for what led to the team’s decision not go for any trades, Melvin had his perspective to share about the issue.
"We met with certain teams, but I don't necessarily see trades happening with us," Melvin said. "Because if you trade a player, you have to replace a player. You're just creating another hole. So nothing [is imminent] in that regard.”
Not unlike the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cincinnati Reds also did not have a substantial transaction to go for. That is largely because – so it seems, of the kind of players that are available to them.
"We still believe in our team. We believe in our younger players. We believe in the guys from last August on, it's just a matter of [covering] a 162-game season. That's the risk factor that we take,” said Melvin.
However, a subject that will certainly attract both attention and subsequent debate is the need to add a starting-pitcher. Being among the free-agent dominoes, Zack Greinke is yet to agree to the offers made to him.
The Brewers have yet to make a final decision in this regard. Whether they intend to re-sign the player or go for some other starter is a matter of speculation at the moment.
A lot might have been left to desire as far as the pitching is concerned this past season wherein the Brewers did not have a good end. Thus, it goes without saying that the Brewers know the significance of a quick move in this regard along with addressing the need of bringing in relievers.
