Milwaukee Brewers sweep series against the New York Mets with 6-2 win – MLB Update
Yovani Gallardo threw seven strong innings and Prince Fielder drove in a run with single in the eighth on Sunday, August 21 to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 6-2.
With the fascinating victory, the Brewers also swept the three-game series without much resistance.
So overwhelming was the performance of the Brewers that the Mets could hardly get a semblance of what was happening. "We're playing like we do at home," manager Ron Roenicke said of Milwaukee, which has a major league-best 47-16 at Miller Park.
Lucas Duda of the Mets had an opportunity to put the team back on the track with a home-run in the seventh against Gallardo. But the starter maintained his poise and with the help of the strong offence reconsolidated the Brewers’ position in the game.
That run could have completely transformed the outlook of the game. "Just had to keep it there," Gallardo said. "I just had to leave it all on the field and not allow that go-ahead run to score."
R. A. Dickey commenced the game with a shut-out first inning followed by that Yovani Gallardo’s equally solid spell that hardly allowed the New York Mets any space to go for runs. Both the starters of the respective teams came down hard on the offence, keeping
the game scoreless for a while.
Casey McGehee was the first one to score the first run in the game with his homer to left centre, giving the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning. R. A. Dickey followed with a solid fifth to keep the lead intact for the team.
Prince Fielder’s single to centre against the growingly unplayable knuckleballer of Dickey doubled the lead for the Milwaukee Brewers, effectively putting them in charge of the game. But that did not have to continue for long.
The excitement came in the game when Lucas Duda finally had a hit in the seventh, a homer for the Mets that levelled the score. Once the game was levelled, Manny Acosta relieved Dickey to pitch for the Mets.
Prince Fielder had a single followed by another run that Jerry Hairston Jr. scored, which became only tiebreaking runs but also gave the Brewers 4-2 lead in the game. Francisco Rodriguez came on the mound to pitch a scoreless eighth to keep the Brewers lead
on hold.
Nyjer Morgan and Ryan Braun had a single each in the top of the ninth to make it 6-2 for the Brewers against Jason Isringhausen in the 3-hit inning. With the game in their hands, LaTroy Hawkin proved to be an effective closer, tossing a shut-out to turn
the 6-2 lead into victory and to also sweep the three-game series.
