Milwaukee Brewers thrash Cincinnati Reds 8-4 – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, June 27, staged a comeback and defeated the Cincinnati Reds 8-4 to avoid the three-game sweep. The Reds who had won the previous two encounters could not quite maintain their grip as the Brewers outperformed them in every aspect of the game.
While Brewers' team manager Ron Roenicke stated that they needed the win, it was Zack Greinke who was instrumental in ensuring the majestic victory over the Reds. Having a 9-2 record this season, Greinke allowed only two runs in his spell of six innings with 2.82 ERA, having had three strike-outs.
It was the Reds' starter Homer Bailey who seemed vulnerable on Wednesday, losing another game. In the four innings that he pitched, he allowed seven hits, giving up no less than five runs with 4.42 ERA.
Bailey was well aware of the challenge he was facing on Wednesday when Greinke came on the mound to make a start for the Milwaukee Brewers after the latter’s two consecutive losses in the three-game series.
"Facing a guy like Greinke, if you're not putting up a lot of goose eggs up on the board, you're probably not going to get a win," Bailey said.
In his 15 starts so far, Bailey had a record of 4.42 ERA with six losses and five wins. Reds’ manager Dusty Baker knows where the Brewers’ strength lies.
“One thing the Brewers have always been able to do is hit the ball out of the ballpark," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said. "If you don't make quality pitches, they'll reach the fences."
While the Brewers had the double advantage of Greinke on the mound and aggressive hitters on the plate, the team scored no less than four runs in the ninth inning to conclude the game with emphatic victory as the Reds struggled to make a comeback.
The Reds nevertheless have an eight and a half game lead over the Brewers in the Division. Before the All-Star break, the Brewers will try their utmost to reduce the gap. Both teams will exert themselves to remain at the top, come what may.
