Milwaukee Brewers to move ahead with or without Prince Fielder – MLB News
The future of the contract between the Milwaukee Brewers and Prince Fielder now seems hanging in balance as the team manager Doug Melvin stated on Wednesday, December 7, that the club is now at a point where it is better to move on.
The cloud of uncertainty that prevailed over Fielder’s future, whether to stay with the Brewers or look for some other team, has not dispersed. Instead, the whole matter has assumed more significance now.
To go for Prince Fielder, especially when a large chunk of money is to be allocated for striking a deal with the player, may result in the Brewers inability to fill the other gaps, mainly the bullpen and shortstop.
Prince Fielder has stayed with the Brewers for last six seasons, becoming in essence, an identifiable feature of the Brewers. However, with the likes of Ryan Braun and Corey Hart to stay as outfielders, the Brewers appear to have focused their attention
there.
"I think we're at a point now where we have to consider moving on," general manager Doug Melvin said Wednesday.
With the likes of Yovani Gallardo, the right handed pitcher par excellence to Rickie Weeks who remains the second baseman of the Brewers, the club has secured the contracts with them. If a big offer is to be made to Prince Fielder, the Brewers will not have
a vast margin to get their shortstop and bullpen filled.
Nonetheless, Melvin did not dismiss continuing talks after the club had a discussion with Prince Fielder’s agent Scott Boras. "They were somewhat updating us to where he's at," said Melvin, who said the discussion moved on to other Boras free agents.
What needs to be observed are the talks between Boras and the Milwaukee Brewers, provided discussions are held, which will surely remove the haziness surrounding the whole issue. The Brewers are mentally perpared to move ahead regardless of the situation
with Fielder. Obviously, the team will love to have him as a part of the squad, but if that does not happen, the Brewers are still prepared to forge ahead in the 2012 regular season.
