Milwaukee Brewers win second consecutive game, thrashing Cincinnati Reds 3-1 – MLB Update
Mike Fiers pitched eight superb innings on Tuesday, August 7 to help the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park, Milwaukee. The Reds lost their third consecutive game – second against the Brewers here in the three-game series.
Retiring the first 18 batters, Fiers went for seven strike-outs in his impressive innings, allowing only a run and three hits. The Reds' hitters, who are otherwise known for their power, were kept at bay by Fiers – whom the team is now considering nominating for the Rookie of the Year Award.
The team manager Ron Roenicke was thoroughly impressed by the show Fiers put on, outrivaling the opponent Johnny Cueto who gave up three runs and six hits in his seven innings.
Roenicke believes Fiers has been doing it against all the strong line-ups in the league.
"He pitched an outstanding ball game," Roenicke said. "Absolutely, he has to be put in that conversation (for Rookie of the Year). He's been baffling hitters. And not just average hitters, he's been doing it against some very strong lineups."
As for Fiers himself, he has his own ambition and plans that he practically implements as well.
"Every start I go out there I don't want to give up a hit, but when it got into the sixth and seventh inning, thoughts came into my mind even more," he said. "I'm just trying to put zeroes on the board, no matter if they get 10 hits or zero hits. I just tried to keep my cool and not think about it."
It was Aramis Ramirez who hit a two-run homer in the very first inning to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead which was then capitalised by Fiers. Brandon Phillips hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to bring the lead down to 2-1, but Jean Segura’s RBI ground out in the bottom of the seventh turned the tide in the Brewers' favour.
With a 3-1 lead to their favour, the Brewers dispatched Jim Henderson to pitch the ninth inning and the closer had his first save of the season by rendering Reds' hitters unable to go for any run, thereby helping the team win the game 3-1.
