Milwaukee Brewers yet to find a lefty reliever – MLB News
The third day of Winter Meetings was generally quiet for the Milwaukee Brewers in terms of signing any player. While the Brewers have been on the lookout for relievers, it was the St. Louis Cardinals who signed left-handed Randy Choate on Wednesday, December 5.
Other than Choate, Sean Burnett signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, dwindling considerably the available options for the Brewers as far as the lefty relievers are concerned.
It was only last week when the Brewers left Manny Parra non-tendered, a player who was associated with the team for over a decade.
However, these developments do not seem to have caused any kind of worry for the Brewers. The club is carefully treading their path right now since there still are some relievers that they can consider adding to the roster.
Among them are Tom Gorzelanny, Mike Gonzalez and J. P. Howell, Hideki Okajima, and Will Ohman. Nonetheless, the Brewers have yet to make any formal offer to the free agents.
General manager explains the reasons why the Brewers have so far been not apparently inclined to make an offer.
"We do get a chance to go through a lot of stuff here with our staff, go through the roster, go through the teams, you filter through a lot of things that you think might happen," Melvin said. "If somebody comes up with an idea -- 'Would they do this? Would they do that' -- we just flat-out make the call and find out."
Also, like stated earlier, there is a considerable caution being exercised. There are some reports that suggest that a player might be signed. But when it comes to the player’s name – whether a reliever or batter, disclosure is hard to come.
"The chances of getting the guy, probably, are slim," Melvin said.
The overall concern, nonetheless, remains the bullpen. The past season had not been particularly good for the Brewers in terms of performance in the bullpen. Another such script for the upcoming season will be disconcerting for the Brewers at a time when the team seems to entertain the thoughts of having a championship-calibre side.
