Milwaukee Bucks hire Sidney Moncrief as their assistant coach: NBA Update
NBA legend and former head coach of Development League’s Fort Worth Flyers, Sidney Moncrief was officially named the assistant coach of Milwaukee Bucks yesterday.
The 53 year old Sidney has previously assisted Dallas Mavericks from 2000-2003 and Golden State Warriors from 2007-2009. With the departure of Kelvin Sampson from the associate coaching position, Milwaukee Bucks’ All-time great
Moncrief was the favourite to take the spot and his appointment did not come as a surprise.
Sidney, a five time NBA All-Star, who played for the Bucks for the major portion of his career was very excited on the appointment.
“I’m really excited. Milwaukee was one of the very few places I wanted to coach, first of all. And I only want to coach for people I respect as coaches, and Scott Skiles certainly has those credentials. I've always worked for myself
and if I worked for anyone, I'd have to like them, like the city. Milwaukee certainly fits those criteria." Sidney said.
After spending a dominating tenure in the University of Arkansas and becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer, Sidney Moncrief was selected by the Bucks with the fifth overall pick during the 1979 NB Draft. Sidney played for
10 years in the franchise and being the leader of the Milwaukee Bucks in 1980’s, the NBA legend Moncrief led the team towards the third best winning percentage for the decade, behind Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.
During Sidney’s influential tenure, Milwaukee clinched seven Central Division titles and made it into the Eastern Conference Finals three times. Before calling it quits as a player, Moncrief played another season with the Atlanta
Hawks after sitting out for one complete year. Previously, Sidney created a huge impact on the franchise as a player and now he is determined to repeat the history from the coaching staff.
Another boost that Milwaukee Bucks has received with the arrival of Sidney is the reunion of current head coach Scott Skiles and Moncrief. Back in 1980’s, it was Skiles who teamed up with Sidney to marshal Bucks and now its Sidney
who has joined forces with Skiles on his coaching staff.
"Sidney was the leader of that group. It felt like the right time. Obviously, he's had NBA experience as a player; he's had NBA experience as a coach. He's been around our team, knows some of the things we do. It was just a good
fit right now." Scott said.
With two big names of the league gathered at one place, the Milwaukee Bucks will definitely embark on the road of improvement and become a consistent play-offs contender in the coming years.
