Mind boggling literary question....?

the word "marked" is an adjective.... as in

"He had the marked card, so he went ahead in line"

BUT

for the word " abhorred".... it's a 'transitive verb'. like

"he had the abhorred card, so he had to go behind in line"

HOW COME "ABHORRED" IS NOT AN ADJECTIVE?? or is it? but i did research, i dont think it is

  1. In the example you gave, abhorred is an adjective.

    Marked can be a verb or an adjective also, depending on the context.


  2. It IS an adjective, when you are using it in this sense.  The same applies to lots of words.  They are classed as different "parts of speech" depending upon how they are used within a sentence.

    For example, in the sentence, "I said that that "that", that that man used, was incorrect".  The word "that" is used in several different ways.
