Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world and Mojang, the game’s developer, expects a number of other studios to join the genre in the future.
The free-to-play title has become a part of popular culture over the course of the past several months as a large number of the game’s fan base have even gone on to purchase themselves premium accounts.
A number of YouTube channels have sprung up all of which are dedicated on bringing user created content based on the game. Many gamers and consumers alike are also speculating as to when the game would be made available for handheld devices and Smartphones, such as the iPhone or Android devices.
There have been plenty of rumours and speculation that the game could also be making its way on to Microsoft’s Xbox console, yet there have been no confirmed reports of that as yet.
The success of the game in the highly competitive industry is sure to have turned a few heads from a few of the larger, more well known studios as Minecraft currently has no competition in the genre at this point in time.
However, Jens Bergensten, the lead developer of Minecraft, is fairly confident that even if other studios explore the genre their titles would be very different to what Mojang have come up with.
He stated, “No, it would probably be a very different game if at a large company.”
While Minecraft was built from scratch in an indie-studio, not very different from what the stereotypical studio in the basement, the larger companies are sure to add plenty more in terms of polish and content.
That did not put Bergensten off; instead the developer was looking forward to what other studios would come up with in terms of their interpretation of the genre. “But I’m kind of looking forward to bigger companies taking on the same kind of genre, if you should call it that.”
He continued, “Because I think it could make quite cool games, you know, the sandbox environment.”
It would be interesting to see what other studios come up with, but in the meantime Mojang definitely rules the roost with Minecraft.
