Mingtian Fu trounces Hye Youn Hwang in Women’s Singles semi-final of the Vietnam Open Grand Prix
Singapore’s Mingtian Fu secured a podium berth as she reached into the Women’s Singles final after trouncing Hye Youn Hwang of Korea in the semi-final of the 2011 Vietnam Open Grand Prix, in Vietnam, on Saturday, August 27.
The un-seeded Singaporean has been playing top-class badminton throughout the event and played in the same manner in the semi-final of the championship. She took 38 minutes to finish off the semi-final battle in straight games without showing mercy to her
Korean opponent. Youn Hwang failed to produce an impressive game and lost to the in-form Mingtian.
In the first set of the match, Mingtian played with maximum speed but her opponent was also matching the pace of the rallies. The score progressed without any distinction as both ladies remained neck-to-neck until the interval in the opening set, when the
Singaporean was in a lead by reaching 11-10.
In the first-half of the game, the entertaining fight continued and the score reached at 17-17. Mingtian played to her full potential at this crucial stage of the opening set and remained successful by winning it with the margin of 21-19, in 22 minutes.
In the following set, Mingtian controlled the pace right from the opening points of the match and remained ahead of her rival in the opening half. The Korean tried to employ variations in her strokes but Mingtian returned all shots of the Korean in an impressive
way. She was playing wonderful badminton and her positive play earned her a lead of 11-8 in the first-half.
After the break, she continued playing impressive badminton against the Korean who was lacking the finishing touch in her strokes as she missed many chances to bury the bird into her challenger’s court. Mingtian remained focused and won the set with a good
margin of 21-15, in 16 minutes. The battle ended with the margin of 21-19 and 21-15, in 38 minutes.
In the final of the event, Mingtian will be up against Japan’s Kaori Imabeppu, who thrashed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in the semi-final of the event.
