Which one should I pick for first time car??

If your mind is pretty much set on the Mini Cooper, by all means get the more expensive one, of course! In other words, get the Mini Cooper S.

Mini Cooper S has more power and will be more fun to drive than the base Mini.

But I wouldn't recommend Mini Cooper as a first time car or even put it on my list of cars I want. It's one of the worst when it comes to reliability.

Far more fun factor.

I own a 2006 Cooper-S.  It's very reliable.
