  1. I believe all dvd camcorders use the small disks and high quality recording with those is twenty-some minutes per disk. The best quality recording these days is done with mini-dv cassettes. Plus, even if you were to record your version of Gone With The Wind, you wouldn't record constantly, you would record a scene at a time. So being able to only record an hour at a time is no big hardship. You just replace the cassette and continue recording.

  2. i think you may be refering to mini dv (not dvD) and yes they are better.

    in a nutshell -

    1. MUCH better resolution

    2. better archiving

    3. more robust

    4. cheaper than discs.

you can't miss cos it'll do standard def as well as HDV.

full movies? that's kinda vague. a feature length movie on average in 90 mins including credits. a mini dv tape can shoot 90 mins (but it's not recommended) and has a standard 60 min run time.

remember, if you're shooting a movie you'll probably shoot around 10 mins of junk for every minute of the good stuff.

    hope it helps!

  3. You're assuming one of them can; sadly, neither mini DVDs or full sized DVDs can record 90min. We're talking 30min max from both formats.

I realize it'd be cool to just record a 90min movie straight to dvd, but the fact is, no one wants to watch a movie like that (no titles, no music, one takes and no room for mistakes unless you want to sloppily record over it). Buy a mini dv camera. All you need is a firewire cable and recording to your computer is easy. Simply programs like iMovie can help you to the rest, and when it's done you can record your theatre-length video to DVD with tons of programs such as iDVD, or Nero for PC.
