Question:

(Mini Dachshund & Jack Russell Terrier / JRT) Why do these neutered dogs l**k me and then try to hump me?

I have living around both a miniature dachshund and a jack russell terrier (might be a rat terrier). They have always lived separately. When I spend time with them, they get really attached to having me around.

The dachshund licks the couch, blankets, bedding, and people. In the evening he will sit and l**k for several minutes and then lay down to rest. However, sometimes he will pin down my arm and then start to hump away. He is neutered, and never had a chance to sire. I accepted that this was just his way, and let him do it (but he is sternly told by others not to do it when it happens).

However, now the jack russell is doing the same kind of thing. He doesn't l**k as many things as the dachshund. However, he will l**k my skin, and then after a little while, he will sometimes hold on to my arm with his front paws and try to hump. He is also neutered and never had a chance to sire.

What is it with these dogs? Is there something innate about dog behavior, or is it something that I am doing? By letting them l**k, is it sending them some kind of signal? Please advise. Thank you.

  1. it is a sign of affection with most animals

  2. Its a dominance thing not sexual

  3. my friends dashhound does the same thing he to is fixed i dont know why he does it but we just tell every one hes loving on you some times its embarasing he does it to every one some times not all the time and hes about 5 or 6 years old if not older so go figure hes just loving you .........the just had there terrior fixed but he doesnt do that so far anyway.....

  4. You LET these dogs hump you? .... With all due respect, that's pretty disgusting.

What you did when you let him hump you, is you let him think he was dominant over you. That is why neutered dogs hump. You need to stop this behavior immediately. Push them off and say "No!"

  5. Humping is a sign of dominance.

My guess they are trying to assert dominance over you.

  6. Dachunds tend to l**k - but when they l**k you, it's pushy, dominant behavior. Don't let them. As you can see, it leads them to think they can hump you - more dominant behavior.

So when they l**k you, scoop them up and put them on the floor; game over. They'll stop soon enough.
