Mini Rex rabbit, what can I give her to chew?

Hello all,

We have a 2 year old mini rex rabbit

She loves to chew paper and cardboard, but not much wood or wood toys that we give her

We have bought the apple wood stuff and she doesn't seem to like that

the only thing i can do to make her chew/eat the wood is to rub fruit on it like strawberries or blueberries. that seems to get her interested

other than that she doesn't chew wood much

anything you can recommend?

thanks all

  1. She doesn't specifically need to chew on wood so I wouldn't worry too much.

Her teeth should be kept trimmed by eating a proper diet - which is mainly hay! She should have an unlimited supply of grass hay (eg timothy hay) available at all times. If she does not eat enough hay it may be because she is filling up on pellets, so these can be limited to daily portions.

From my experience most rabbit ignore wooden chew sticks etc, although most will happily nibble on cardboard.

As long as she is eating enough hay, and has things like cardboard boxes to chew on she should be fine.

  2. yes,i some cases, rabbits just don't like to chew things.it's all in the mood.

in these cases, you should just try to feed her hay.chewing things other than hay is not actually a "nutritional" thing.it is just about keeping the rabbit from being bored(which,as a matter of fact, shortens their life span).just give her hay and she'll be fine.

also,i suggest just having a basket and placing hay in it.rabbits love hay and she may also chew on the basket, which is a good thing.

    have a nice day!

  3. I put those cardboared pop cases 12/24 packes of coke ext also a phone book to shread! Toilet paper rolls, paper towels roll

  4. A vet will tell you that wood is not necessary to maintain proper teeth care. It usually isn't good because it can give them splinters.

Her normal diet of hay and vegetables will help her teeth healthy.

But if she likes to chew cardboard, try buying hay cakes and feeding them to her, they are a healthy alternative.
