I recently decided to get into miniature horses, and purchased a 4 year old mare. She was supposed to be already bread when I got her , but when the time came ,NO foal. Ihave had her rebread to two more stallions and she's still cycling . Does anyone have any ideas?

  1. Maybe the next time will be the charm. Just try, try, and try again. Some mares just don't follow the rules in predicting ovulation. She will be receptive to the stallion from the beginning of her estrus cycle but the window of ovulation is short and toward the end of the cycle. The general rule is that she will be in heat cycle for 5 to 7 days and that the  window of ovulation is during the last 1 or 2 days of the cycle but trying to predict that and failing can certainly be distressing and frustrating. But I think her uterine swelling (edema) is the best predictor. Her fertile window opens and she will release egg about 36 hours after peak uterine swelling and since the stallion's sperm retains maximum viability for at least 48 hours in her reproductive tract but the egg retains maximum viability for only about 12 hours, I think the ideal time to mate her is 28 to 32 hours after peak uterine swelling. Her most fertile time will be just before she goes out of heat and so if the stallion's sperm at maximum viability is in her reproductive tract the last 48 hours of her heat cycle she should become impregnated. But if not, just try again the next cycle, and again and again. But don't despair. Some mares just don't follow the rules in predicting ovulation and so the most effective way to get her pregers is probably to mate her every other day until she goes out of heat.
