Minimum age to potty train?

I just saw a picture of Suri Cruise, aged 2 and 3 months, and she's still wearing nappies.

My mum potty trained me as soon as I could walk... when would/ did you train your kids?

  1. Average age for girls is 3 years and average age for boys is 3 1/2 years.  They can be pottytrained early but that requires parents still making sure they get to the bathroom and supervising, a toddler under 2 years old can't be trusted to go potty by themselves and their bladders are very small and weak so they are more likely to have accidents.  To many fully pottytrained means the child can get up and go potty on their own without a reminder and they can pull their own pants up and down and have very limited accidents.

  2. Well, I worked at a day care for 6 years and the people telling you that 3 years old is the normal age to start, wrong that is NOT normal, that is being lazy on the parents and the child's part. Most day cares won't even accept the child if they are not potty trained by 3. For girls the normal age is 1 and a half (18 months) to two and for boys from 18 month to 2 and a half to the LATEST. Another issue is also race, I noticed a lot of kids that were NOT potty trained BY the age of 2 or 2 and a half were Hispanic and/ or Caucasian children. Don't take it personal, but these are facts. I personally was potty trained at 13 months, but every child is different. It also does depend on if the child is ready, but most kids don't know themselves so it is up to the parent to make the decision on how long they want to change pampers. Good Luck in potty training.

  3. i trained my gal using potty as soon as she can sit up steadily every morning...

often, she will wee in the potty...

as soon as she can walk, i put on the pull-up pants for her and sometimes, she will run to the potty to poo herself...

  4. I started my son off at 2, but we weren't good to go until 3.  It was more when he was ready--we made it a fun time:)  Every child is different as is every parent, so I think you will get a lot of different responses to this one.

  5. when ever they are ready.  i was potty trained when i was 3 years old.

  6. when they started walking and taking off their poopoo diapers!!

  7. we do elimination communication.  dd started using potty at 3 weeks old. She is now 7 months and loved to sit on her little potty and is so happy not having to sit in her own waste.

  8. the child will let you know when they are ready.

  9. Starting at 18 months, I switched to cloth diapers, started changing my son in the bathroom, and set out a baby bjorn potty for him. Once he started feeling the wetness of his diaper immediatly, he went into the bathroom to take it off. After showing him the potty, he started using it pretty consistently. The process took only a month or two from start to finish. I'm not saying this is a miracle method, or if he wasn't ready that this would work. This is the method advocated by Montessori schools and most children are potty learned by 2.

  10. I was able to use the "big girl potty" when I was 3. Suri is barely 2 in the picture, I wouldn't expect her to be potty trained. She probably IS being potty trained, but has those on "just in case" like most young children do while being potty trained.

  11. Doctor's say wait until they're 2 so they fully understand the concept...but all kids are different.
