I want to build a workshop, abour 16 x 30 feet... I want a wood floor for comfort....so what is the minimum foundation that would work for me? I'm in Ontario and we get lots of frost.

Can I just pour a thick footing all around the perimeter and build on top, or do I need to dig down and build a complete foundation....

  1. I know in BC canada u have to dig down to hard pan ( which is solid rock )

  2. Typically here in the USA the requirement is 30" below ground and 6" above ground. There is a matter of requirements for air underneath, but a workshop perhaps not.

A person may look at a mono slab, putting down wood strips and then wood on top.A little secret here,if you look there is at least one company out of Seattle that sells hot water heaters.Radiant heat, cheap.

  3. its cheaper to dig down 3 ft. and pour an 8 in.thick footer and lay up about 5 courses of block ...its cheaper to fill the ditch with block than with concrete...

  4. It really depends on if you have local code enforcement. If you have no inspections or local requirments you could just dig down and put in spot footings below the frost level with concrete blocks stacked to make piers.  Then build your floor frame atop the piers.
