Minimum requirements on joining the police force in california?

I am currently 17 years old and am going to graduate high school early(in February). I wanted to know if I can join the police academy right after while I am still 17 and become a police officer at the age of 18. I know most cities have a minimum age limit of 21 to become a sworn in police officer, but I am pretty sure that 18 is the minimum age to actually be able to become a police officer. So, I was wondering if anyone knew a city where they would hire a 18 year old if he had his high school diploma and had graduated from the police academy. I really want to become a cop as soon as possible. Help me out please!

  1. Police academies are often run through community colleges in California and anyone willing to pay the tuition (and pass a fingerprint clearance) can attend - they are public.

Agencies who have their own academies (LAPD for example) do not allow non-law enforcement employees to attend.  Agencies like this are in the minority.

No agency in this state will hire an 18 year old as a police officer.

  2. I believe in most cities, to be eligible for police academy you must be 20 1/2 so by the time of graduation you will be 21. You have to be 21 because to carry a sidearm/handgun you must be of the legal age of 21! If you want a jump start look into an Explorer, Cadet or Police Intern program, itll be worth it and it will get you valuable experience. Good luck!

  3. .  You are correct.  You can do what you propose. I suggest that you go to the smallest city that has a police force and apply.  They would be glad to have you.  Apply to the academy.  Budget cutbacks are hitting the bigger departments.

  4. i hope you dont become a cop at 18.
