Question:

Ministry of Transport Vehicle Checks?

As the MOT test was introduced almost 40 years ago, when motor vehicles were a lot less roadworthy after three years, is it not time that the test was carried out at a greater interval, given that vehicles are manufactured to a higher degree and last longer?

  1. Same here- I've a 1973 Land Rover that is easy to work on - and passed first time.

My peugeot 206 failed on brakes and light and wheel alignment !

It has also fried it's ECU when the coilpack blew up, needed all brake and bearings replaced and a host of other problems.

I agree with a grace peroid from new manufacture to MOT, but after that - cars can actually become dangerous within less than a year from a check due to driving conditions.

Thesedays the metal used is so thin, and products designed to fail after 8 years from manufacture - This is considered the "End of servicable life" for some manufacturers.

  2. imagine a car as it gets to say 10 year old, done 120,000miles ,everything worn and you'd like to leave it more than a year without checking it over? no way! once they reach about 6 year old i think they should be mot'd twice a year

  3. ...and naturally, people are so much more careful about maintaining their vehicles properly these days, than they were 40 years ago, aren't they??

    No, of course they aren't.

Yet another poorly though out anti-safety idea...

  4. we're the only country where we test cars every 12 months most countrys its every 2 years ireland has only brought the national car test in, in the last 7/8 years, Just think of the revenue the government would loose if it was done every 2 year here, my god where would they get the money from this country is taxed to the hilt as it is,

                 RIP OF BRITAIN

  5. Part of the test includes steering and suspension which can be damged by bad driving.I had a 15 year old car which passed the test when a 4 year old car failed.
