Miniyakhe Sityatha collects impressive unanimous decision win over Marjohn Yap – Boxing News
Miniyakhe Sityatha, the current South African super flyweight champion, grabbed an impressive unanimous decision against Filipino pugilist Marjohn Yap, in a 10-round bout held on May 12, 2012.
The ring for the bout was set up at Orient Theatre situated in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa and the event was jointly promoted by XABA boxing promotions and ALA promotions.
The above duo co-headlined the event whereas the light welterweight bout between Mzolisi Yoyo and Mzukisi Mgidi with former’s South African light welterweight title on the line headlined the Saturday night showdown.
The bout and especially its decision is being denoted as a controversial and somewhat confusing one since the critics are not accepting the rookie Sityatha as the winner of the bout.
The facts also seem to deny the possibility that the South African lad overwhelmed a man of substantial experience with such ease. Sityatha, 21, was entering in his ninth career bout and boasted eight wins and just one loss.
Since his last loss to Themba Joyi, the young lad is on a four-bout win streak and even grabbed his country’s apex divisional title. Miniyakhe grabbed his South African super flyweight title after collecting a 10th round technical knockout win over Unathi
Gqokoma and since then has defended it twice against Mncedi Yokose and Thembelani Maphuma.
A bird’s eye view of the resume of both men shows that Marjohn possessed a clear upper hand in almost all the facets of the sport and was not an easy target at all. Miniyakhe has never fought a man with such experience. Moreover, he has nailed just four
opponents by knockout as compared to Yap’s nine KO wins.
Miniyakhe’s Saturday night opponent, the Filipino proud Yap, was entering in his 24th career bout and boasted 16 wins. Though he has lost seven bouts yet he is not an easy brawler who can be tamed with comfort.
Above all, Yap was coming from an emphatic third round technical knockout win over Paul Apolinario. All these aspects shifted the odds in favour of the Filipino ‘Probinsyanong Intsik’.
The bout kicked off and surprisingly Yap put forth a low-calibre performance. During the whole 10-round showdown, the South African held a clear upper hand and did not allow Yap to capitalise his mistakes and deficiencies.
Yap exhibited a clear lack of agility and did not use his foot work optimally, the fact that made him a sitting duck in front of the more agile and swift Miniyakhe. The bout ended and the two designated judges allocated 98-93 and 99-93 in favour of Miniyakhe.
With this win, Miniyakhe has collected his eighth victory whereas Yap has received yet another loss and now exhibits eight defeats in his resume.
