Minnesota Golden Gophers fire head coach Tim Brewster
The Minnesota Golden Gophers have announced that they have fired head coach Tim Brewster. Brewster was fired after the Gophers lost their sixth game of the season to Purdue on Saturday 16 October.
Brewster’s record at Minnesota was terrible, with the team struggling to a 15-30 record under the head coach. In addition, the club went a dreadful 6-21 in conference play and was 0-10 in trophy games, never beating arch rivals Wisconsin and Iowa in his
four years at the helm.
The Gophers have not been a top football program in some time and Brewster joined the fold with the promise of getting the club back to the Rose Bowl, something the coach was far from achieving.
Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi spoke about the decision to fire Brewster, saying.
“Those that wear maroon and gold are disappointed, embarrassed, frustrated, angry and hurt by a 1-6 football team and the lack of being really competitive in the Big Ten for a long time.”
The 2010 season has been particularly poor, with the team sitting at a terrible 1-6 with their only win coming against Middle Tennessee, who was without their starting quarterback in the first week of the season.
Maturi spoke about the university’s struggle on the field and the need for a more competitive program.
“The fact of the matter is president Bruininks knows, Joel Maturi knows, others know that football is the engine to every athletic program. And our engine is sputtering and we need to find a way to fix it and we’re committed to doing so," he said.
Minnesota has a great deal of work to do if they hope to get back to top form in the Bowl Championship Series. The school suffered embarrassing losses to both South Dakota and Northern Illinois this season and is currently ranked below 70th in
the nation in nearly every category.
The Golden Gophers' next game is against the Penn State Nittany Lions on 23 October.
