Minnesota Golden Gophers willing to spend on new coach
Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi has said that the university is willing to spend a great deal of money in order to get a top head football coach to the school.
Minnesota recently fired their head coach Tim Brewster after the Golden Gophers got out to a terrible 1-6 record. Brewster spent three and a half seasons with the club and was not able to get the program back on its feet, going a depressing 15-30.
Minnesota was not willing to spend when they hired Brewster, who was a tight-end coach with the Denver Broncos before he took the job, which paid him only $1 million a season.
The school has recognized that they are in desperate need of a strong football program and they are finally willing to spend the money on a top coach, in order to get back to the top of the Big Ten. Maturi spoke about the university's willingness to develop
their program.
“Minnesota can and should be competitive in the Big Ten. We have a great facility here at TCF Bank Stadium. We are a world class academic institution. One of America’s finest cities and contrary to published reports, the resources are available. They are
in place. There is a commitment to having a winning football program at the University of Minnesota.”
The decision to finally put money into the football program comes with the university approaching the 50th anniversary of their last trip to the Rose Bowl.
Some of the names that have been thrown around for the new coaching position have included former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach and Vikings defensive co-ordinator Leslie Frazier.
Regardless of who takes over the club, it will not be easy getting an inept program back on its feet and to the top of one of college football’s most competitive conferences.
Minnesota next takes the field against Penn State on Saturday 23 October.
