San Antonio Silver Stars 101 - Phoenix Mercury 99
Sophia Young scored a game high 26 points and clinched eight rebounds as San Antonio Silver Stars defeated the Phoenix Mercury 101-99 at US Airways Center, improving their season opening record to 4-0 for the first time in franchise
history.
Becky Hammon added 22 points and grabbed nine assists while Danielle Adams came off the bench with 16 points and six boards for Silver Stars.
Diana Taurasi chipped in with a team-high 20 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Candice Dupree contributed 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Phoenix.
Penny Taylor also racked up 18 points and grabbed 10 assists and three steals while DeWanna Bonner finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for Mercury, who lost their third straight game of the season.
Mercury were terrific during the first two quarters of the game as they successfully converted the nine turnovers of the Silver Stars into 16 points and held a 51-37 lead at intermission.
With the fourth consecutive victory of the season in line, the Silver Stars headed out aggressively in the third quarter of the game. Young raised her game in the second half and scored 12 of her 26 points early in the third period
as San Antonio slashed a 14-point halftime deficit to two points, 76-74, at the end of third.
Mercury stretched their lead to 79-74 early in the fourth quarter but Silver Stars managed to make it a two-point contest, 81-79, at 07:19 mark. Adams launched a jumper with 06:47 to go in the final period to give San Antonio their
first lead of the game, 83-82 and the Silver Stars never trailed for rest of the period.
Seattle Storm 68 - Indiana Fever 54
Swin Cash led all the players with 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists as the defending champion Seattle Storm beat the Indiana Fever 68-54 at Key Arena.
Sue Bird added 12 points and four assists while LeCoe Willingham came off the bench with a season-best 10 points and seven rebounds. Katie Douglas led Indiana with 11 points, six rebounds and two steals while Tamika Catchings grabbed
14 rebounds.
It was a poor shooting night as Indiana ended on 16-of-55 from the field and Seattle were 22-of-66 overall.
Storm went on a 10-4 run in the first five minutes of the opening quarter and held a 15-10 lead, going into the second. Seattle then crushed Fever 22-9 in the second quarter and pushed its lead to 37-19 at halftime.
Trailing by 18 points after first half, Indiana cut their deficit to 15 points, 40-25, with 07:04 remaining in the quarter. However, Storm reeled off an 18-8 spurt during the rest of the period and sprinted with a 58-33 lead into
the final quarter.
Fever outplayed Seattle by 21-10 in the fourth, but it was too little too late as the game ended at 68-54.
