Minnesota Lynx and Tulsa Shock win - WNBA Roundup August 28, 2011: Part 1
Five games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Sunday, August 28, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
Minnesota Lynx 72 – San Antonio Silver Stars 61
At AT&T Center, Maya Moore tallied 19 points on 7 for 16 shooting from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds as Minnesota Lynx topped San Antonio Silver Stars 72-61, clinching the top seed in the Western Conference for the first time
in franchise history. It was fifth consecutive victory for Minnesota and sixth straight loss for San Antonio.
Seimone Augustus scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed five rebounds while Rebekkah Brunson pulled down a game best 14 rebounds in the victory.
Roneeka Hodges led the Silver Stars with 12 points on 4 for 9 shooting from the field, including 4 for 8 from three-point range. Jia Perkins and Tully Bevilaqua scored 10 points each while San Antonio’s leading scorer Becky Hammon
added just nine points in the loss.
Lynx shot 42 percent from the field and limited the Silver Stars to only 30.2 percent from the floor. Minnesota also thrashed San Antonio 30-4 on points in the paint.
Augustus scored 16 of her points in the first half of the game as Minnesota held a 42-40 lead in a closely fought first half. For the Silver Stars though, the wheels started to come off after the break. Lynx held them to only ten
points in the third quarter and stretched their lead to ten points, 60-50. Minnesota maintained their lead in the fourth quarter and walked away with 23rd victory of this season.
Tulsa Shock 83 – Connecticut Sun 72
Sheryl Swoopes topped all the scorers with 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Tulsa Shock defeated Connecticut Sun 83-72 on at BOK Center for their second consecutive after a 20-game losing stretch.
Ivory Latta contributed 19 points and six assists while Tiffany Jackson registered her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 boards. Amber Holt added 10 points, four assists and two rebounds in the victory.
Tina Charles recorded a double-double to lead the Sun with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Renee Montgomery posted 12 points for Connecticut, who saw their two-game winning streak halted. Shock shot 57.1 percent (32 for 56) from the
floor while the visiting team shot only 41.1 percent (30 for 73). Connecticut however committed only six turnovers as compared to 13 by the Shock.
Sun held Tulsa to 16 points each in the first two quarters of the game and held an 11-point lead, 43-32, at halftime. Shock outscored Connecticut 27-16 in the third quarter and tied the game at 59, heading into the fourth.
Tulsa opened the last quarter on a 17-2 run and held a 76-61 lead with 02:54 left in the game. Shock did not trail for rest of the period and walked away with only third victory so far in this season.
