Minnesota Lynx defeat Seattle Storm 84-71; Remain Unbeaten in the season – WNBA Recap
Minnesota Lynx defeated the Seattle Storm 84-71 here at the Target Center on Sunday night, stretching their winning streak to 10, which dates back to last season.
Lynx are the defending champions and won in straight games in the WNBA Finals last season. They have continued their momentum into this season as well, going 4-0 after the victory against the Storm. Maya Moore had 19 points and
6 rebounds, going 7 of 12 from the field and 5 of 7 from the distance. Ann Wauters led Storm scoring with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
“Ending the season the way we did was definitely a great feeling, but I don't know if we're necessarily looking back at last season. We're looking at it as momentum, but we're not looking at it as we don't have to work hard anymore.
I mean, it's a new year” said Moore after the win.
A 5-4 lead with 5:42 remaining in the 1st quarter was the only lead the Storm held throughout the game. The Lynx led for the rest of the match, and completely controlled the game. They closed the first period leading
17-9 and then opened the second period with back to back three pointers.
Seattle got their first point of the period at the 6:15 mark with a layup by Camille Little. The Lynx led 37-24 at halftime.
Maya Moore was unstoppable on the night as she hit 5 three pointers off just seven attempts. She helped keep the Lynx ahead and in control of a comfortable lead.
The Lynx led 68-50 at the end of the third period. A layup by Devereaux Peters to open the scoring in the final period gave the Lynx their largest lead of the night at 20. The lead was too much for the Storm to cut in one period
and they also did not have any answer for the Lynx defence.
Minnesota won 84-71 at the end of the game.
Seimone Augustus had 10 points on the night and added 6 assists, but went 2 of 7 from the field. Monica Wright added 11 points and Peters finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds coming off the bench for Minnesota. Little had 10
points and 4 rebounds and Shekinna Stricklen added 12 points coming off the bench for Seattle.
Two time champions and winners of the 2010 WNBA season, Seattle have lost their hold on the league since losing Lauren Jackson. She is a 3 time season MVP but was limited to only 13 games last season due to injuries and has decided
to take this season off. She is presently in her home country, Australia getting ready for the London Olympics this summer.
Seattle shot 37.9% from the field and 41.2% from the distance. In compassion, the Lynx shot 44.8 percent from the field and a staggering 57.1% from the distance. They were also 16 of 18 from the foul line. Minnesota outrebounded
the Storm 40-27 and had 5 more assists than Seattle at 24. They also had 5 more blocks at 7 as they dominated every aspect of the game.
