Minnesota Lynx edge out Washington Mystics 79-77 - WNBA Recap
On Wednesday night, the game between Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx went right down to the wire and Mystics had pretty much jeopardized Lynx’s perfect start of the season, if not for Lindsay Whalen.
With only 25.7 clicks remaining in the game the scores tied at 77 apiece, Lindsay Whalen came up with a layup which decided the fate of the game. Minnesota edged out Mystics, 79-77 and rolled on to a 5 game winning streak here
at Verizon Center.
The reigning WNBA champs had 4 players in double figures. Maya Moore and Rebekkah Brunson had a team best 16 points each.
Seimone Augustus tallied 15 and Whalen chipped in with 11 points and 7 assists. She was contended with her performance after the game.
"I figured if I could just get in the lane, something good would happen,'' said Whalen. ``I ended up missing the first one. Somehow the ball came back to me and I was able to get it up high enough to go in.''
On the other hand, this was a phenomenal effort from Mystics who have lost 2 and won 1 in this season so far. They were marshalled by reserve Matee Ajavon, she collected 20 points while Monique Currie and guard Noelle Quinn scored
13 points each.
Crystal Langhorne had 12 points, and said that she was thinking of the victory the entire time but Lindsay dagger changed it all.
`We're going to win the game, that's what we're thinking,'' said Langhorne. ``It was that possession; we couldn't get a defensive rebound. Then Lindsay has the ball, shoots, gets her own offensive rebound and scores with 1 second
left. It's tough.''
Lynx opened the game with a 9-3 burst but Washington quickly trimmed it down to 10-11. Augustus came up with a trey for Minnesota that resulted into a 15-2 spurt and Lynx capped of the frame with a 26-12 advantage.
The impetus gathered in the 1st frame helped Minnesota to pull a 12-2 run early in the second period. With this run they widened the gap to 38-14. The mammoth lead helped them to cruise through the rest of the segment
and by the end of opening half Mystics could only come as close as 51-31.
With 6 minutes and 36 seconds remaining in the third Washington were up with 59-35. However things didn’t remain the same afterwards. Mystics came back strong and with a huge 21-5 spurt they narrowed down the gap to 63-56 deep
into the frame. However Lynx redeemed their double-digit 68-58 lead by the end of 3rd stanza.
Mystics were determined to bag the game and they opened the decisive frame with a 10-nothing burst to tie the scores at 68 each. The game remained highly competitive in the ensuing passage but Whalen’s jumper helped Lynx to bank
their 5th game of the season.
