Minnesota Lynx end Phoenix Mercury’s six-game winning streak; Secure a 106-98 win – WNBA Recap
On Wednesday afternoon, Seimone Augustus tied her career high with 25 points as Minnesota Lynx notched up a 106-98 triumph over the Phoenix Mercury at US Airways Center. In doing so, they halted Mercury’s six-game winning streak
and also moved them from the first place in the Western Conference.
It was the third consecutive victory of Lynx, who are heading the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) with a 10-4 record so far in this season.
Augustus also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. The 27-year-old player shot a brilliant 11 for 15 from the field, including 2 for 3 from three-point range.
Lindsay Whalen had 16 points, eight assists, three rebounds and two steals while Maya Moore added 14 points and a game-high four steals in the victory. Rebekkah Brunson and Taj McWilliams-Franklin also scored 14 points each for
the Lynx, who have won four of their previous five games.
Diana Taurasi led Phoenix with 24 points and six assists. She pinned 12 of 14 free throws in 34 minutes of action. Penny Taylor ended the game with 23 points, on a 8 for 10 shooting from the field, five assists and four rebounds.
Candice Dupree added 14 points and seven rebounds while DeWanna Bonner came off the bench with 12 points and seven boards for Phoenix, who lost their first game since July 1, 2011.
Minnesota shot 56.3 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from free throw line. Phoenix, on the other hand, shot 51.6 percent from the floor and 70.6 percent from three-point range. Lynx however outplayed the hosts 13-7 on fast
break points and 46-36 on points in the paint. In addition to that, Minnesota committed just only 10 turnovers as compared to 17 by Mercury.
Phoenix carried a 16-11 lead in the first quarter before the Lynx scored 18 points in the last four minutes of the opening period to take one-point lead, 29-28, into the second. Taylor scored nine of her points in a tightly contested
second quarter as the Mercury held a point lead at halftime.
Minnesota pulled away in the third and stretched their lead to 14 points, 80-66, with two minutes to go in the frame. However, Phoenix responded with a 7-2 run and narrowed the gap to nine points at the end of the period.
Phoenix could not stop Lynx early in the fourth quarter as they widened their lead to 13 points, 97-84, with in the first five minutes left on the clock. Minnesota maintained their lead until the final buzzer and walked away with
their fifth road victory.
