Minnesota Lynx forward Rebekkah Brunson named WNBA Western Conference Player of the Month – Part 1
Rebekkah Brunson, the veteran Minnesota Lynx forward has been honoured as the Western Conference Player of the Month award for the games played in June. This is the first player of the month award in the franchise history.
After receiving the honour, Brunson said, “It is an honour to be recognized as the conference's top player for the month of June.” “The team success the Lynx are enjoying makes it even better.”
The 6ft-2in forward was also named the Western Conference Player of the Week for the games played through June 3 to June 12.
Brunson, in her seventh WNBA season and second with the Lynx, had a dominant month. She ended June with an average of 12.1 points, a league-leading 11.7 rebounds and a career-high 1.3 assists per game and helped Lynx get off to
a franchise-best 6-3 start. The player has made a significant impact on the Minnesota’s successful start to this season, as they are second in the West. She is also the main reason, the Minnesota are currently the best rebounding team in the league, averaging
39.1 rebounds a game.
Brunson recorded six straight double-double to start this season, tying the WNBA record shared by the former Los Angeles Sparks centre Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker. The player averaged 14.5 points and 13.3 rebounds per game while
shooting 61 percent from the floor over that stretch.
During the month, Brunson played nine games for Minnesota and posted stats of, 109 points, 105 assists, 12 assists and nine steals. Let us take a review of Brunson’s performance during the nine games of the month:
Double-double in the season opener
Brunson got off to a good start and registered double-double in the first game of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the Lynx’s 82-74 defeat against the Los Angeles Sparks.
Game high 15 rebounds
Just two days after a defeat in the season opener, Minnesota exacted revenge against the Sparks on the back of Brunson’s terrific performance. Brunson scored 10 points on the night and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds as Lynx cruised
past the Sparks 86-69 for their first victory of the season. She hit 5 for 9 from the field in that game.
Brunson’s game-high 17 points
Brunson canned a game-high 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as her team knocked out the Tulsa Shock 75-65 for their second consecutive win of the season. The player hit 6 for 9 from the field and pinned 5 of 7 free throws on the
night.
