Minnesota Lynx get past San Antonio Silver Stars 96-84; Taj McWilliams-Franklin enters the record books – WNBA Recap
On Tuesday night, Taj McWilliams-Franklin set a WNBA record by grabbing 1,052 career offensive rebounds as she helped Minnesota Lynx defeat San Antonio Silver Stars 96-84 in overtime.
She also scored 19 points in the game and was provided huge help from Rebekkah Brunson who recorded 17 points and 20 rebounds. Seimone Augustus also had a good game with 19 points while Lindsay Whalen scored
15 and Maya Moore recorded 14 points.
But, the key to victory was Minnesota’s ability to clean up the glass on both ends of the floor. Minnesota grabbed 19 offensive rebounds in the game which led to 29 easy points.
“We knew we had to limit their second chance points,'' Cheryl Reeve, Minnesota’s coach said post game. “We really focused in on not letting them get those offensive boards and we always try to attack the glass
offensively to get extra possessions and extra points.''
San Antonio’s effort was led by Sophia Young and Jia Perkins. Both managed their way to 19 points while Becky Hammon added 13 points and 4 assists.
Minnesota got off to a good start as they led 6-2 early but a three pointer from Hammon saw things get back to being close. The Silver Stars remained equal to Minnesota for the remaining time in the period and
a 6-3 run to close the stanza saw them take a two point lead.
Both sides remained equally competitive throughout the second quarter and by the close of it there was not much to separate the two teams. The score at half time was 36-35 in San Antonio’s favour.
San Antonio started the second half with a 6-2 run but a similar response from the Lynx saw things return to the way they were. Minnesota snatched a two point lead right at the end of the period courtesy of a
three pointer from Augustus.
An 8-1 run to start the final quarter saw Minnesota further prolong their advantage but by the end of the quarter San Antonio had levelled the scores up with an 8-2 run of their own and an extra period needed
to be played out to decide a winner in this one.
Minnesota, were finally able to find some kind of separation courtesy of a 10-0 run to start the extra period. That was a game changer and Spark never threatened after that.
