Minnesota Lynx hand a 102-70 drubbing to New York Liberty – WNBA Recap
Coming into the game fresh from their first loss of the season, Minnesota Lynx ran riot over the visiting New York Liberty 102-70 at the Target Center on Thursday night.
Five players made sizable contributions in the game to get things back on track following a loss on Monday against Seattle Storm.
Seimone Augustus managed to get a season high of 26 points. She shot the ball 9-of-12 from the field, going 4 of 4 from beyond the arc to go along with 8 assists and 7 rebounds.
“We wanted to see how we'd bounce back. I think everybody wanted to see it,'' Augustus said after the game. “We had a lack of aggression, but in the second quarter, we showed what we can do.''
Taj McWilliams-Franklin managed to contribute 15 points while Maya Moore notched up a double-double in the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rebekkah Brunson nearly missed a double with 10 rebounds and 9 points.
Devereaux Peters kept the bench scoring alive for Minnesota with 18 points and 6 rebounds in the game. Candice Wiggins also came off the bench to make an impressive contribution of 10 points with 9 of them coming from behind the
three point line.
For Liberty, Cappie Pondexter managed to put in her best performance of the season with 30 points but the only player that lent her a helping hand was Nicole Powell who managed 16 points while coming off the bench.
The rest of the New York players struggled to get their offense going after the first quarter which was highlighted by their coach John Whisenant after the game.
“This is the hardest team in the WNBA to defend because they have so many offensive weapons,'' Whisenant said. ``They just spanked us. They played like a WNBA champion.''
Early in the ball game, Minnesota struggled to get their offense going which allowed New York to take a 22-17 lead after the first quarter.
New York started the second quarter with back to back three pointers from Pondexter and Powell but till the 4:09 mark of the period; the scores were levelled up at 34 courtesy of a 17-6 run from Minnesota.
By the close of the first half, Minnesota, were able to make a successful comeback into the game and were holding the visitors at bay with the scores at 45-42.
Minnesota came out firing in all cylinders to start the third quarter with a 12-2 burst and stomp their authority in the game. They continued to pile on the pressure for the remaining time in the quarter and led 80-63 before the
start of the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw the Lynx continue on similar fashion, opening up the proceedings with a 17-3 run to prolong their advantage to 31 points. This allowed Minnesota to close out the game with relative ease, finishing with the
score line being 102-70.
