Minnesota Timberwolves' search to hire a new head coach continues: NBA Update
Minnesota Timberwolves is the only team left with a vacant coaching position in NBA as their search to hire a dynamic coach continues. The president of the franchise David Kahn indicated earlier that the team will carry a thorough
search to appoint someone who can bring an aggressive mentality in the players.
"I think we'll have a thorough search, and I think we'll find somebody who really embraces the notion of wanting to play an up-tempo style on both sides of the floor - both sides - and somebody who really connects well with young
players," David said.
They were expected to show some signs of hiring a new head coach during this week but that has not happened so far and now according to the sources, Minnesota Timberwolves won’t be making any moves until the next week.
The Timberwolves entered the market for the sixth time since 2005 to fulfill their coaching position on 12th July, 2001 after parting ways with the 53 year old Kurt Rambis. Under the leadership of Rambis, the Timberwolves
compiled 32-132 record in the last two seasons and finished with the worst overall record on both the occasions. This ultimately resulted in a messy divorce with Kurt.
During the off-season, Timberwolves sorted six candidates to choose from. Among those candidates is NBA’s All-time leader in wins Don Nelson, who still wants to coach at the age of 71.
Nelson not only showed his interest in coaching Minnesota Timberwolves, five-time NBA Champion Don also believes that he can change the fate of the lowly Timberwolves who is tagged as the worst team of the league.
"It'd be a great fit. I love Minnesota. Really, throughout my career, what I've done is taken teams with bad records and with every situation I've made them better. I like to be around young players. I've had great success with
bad teams, getting them on the right track, getting them to max out. I have a great history there." Nelson said.
Larry Brown and Bernie Bickerstaff are the other two veteran coaches who will contend Don Nelson for the coaching position. On the other hand, the reaming three candidates on the Minnesota Timberwolves’ list are on the threshold
of their coaching careers and have less experience which includes Mike Woodson, Terry Porter and Sam Mitchell.
Considering Timberwolves decides to pick a young name, Minnesota’s former captain Sam Mitchell will be the top candidate. Mitchell played ten seasons in Timberwolves uniform as a small forward and recently coached Toronto Raptors
for four seasons.
