Minnesota Timberwolves’ Ricky Rubio helps the victims of tornado – NBA Update
The 20 year old point guard Ricky Rubio of Minnesota Timberwolves took part in his first charitable activity for the team and helped a family from the North Minneapolis who was deprived from everything after a tornado struck their home.
Despite of being scheduled to pick a flight for Spain next day, the Spanish point guard Rubio stepped up to spend some time with the McPhersons after hearing their story. The catastrophe almost wiped out all of their possessions and they were forced to stay with their grandfather. McPhersons 3 year old kid Taj was wearing Miami Heat superstar Dwyane Wade’s Jersey when Ricky showed up to meet the family.
Rubio took the boy to a Build-A-Bear store where both of them stuffed a new bear, picked clothes from different stations at the store and got him all stitched up. Ricky signed his initials on the box in which the bear was packed and the little boy gave Rubio a big high-five on the way back home.
“It's so fun. I love the kids. He's amazing. I know sometimes, I don't know why, bad things happen. Everybody has to help to try to be unselfish and part of the (community)." Rubio said.
Urban Homeworks, an organization who is helping the families in the recovery process has lined the McPhersons for a new place to live. The Minnesota Timberwolves and the young Spanish star Ricky also provided gift certificates for dinner to the father Trevor McPherson, mother Shara McPherson and family and a gift card for a shopping mall.
Taj’s father Trevor said, “Sometimes you have to go through trials and tribulations to go along further in life. It's devastating. A lot of homes and a lot of people over in North Minneapolis is going through a lot. ... But today has been a blessing."
Trevor was very pleased to meet Ricky and said that he will not only get Rubio’s Jersey for the boy, he will also going to come to the game and support the team.
Apart from the first charitable endeavour, Ricky also worked out for the first time with his new teammates. On Saturday morning, the Spanish point guard practiced for two hours with a group that included the influential power forward Kevin Love, Martell Webster, Wes Johnson and the second overall pick from this year’s draft Derrick Williams.
The Timberwolves’ prolific scorer, Love was quite impressed with Rubio’s first work out and said, "He's a guy who sees passes ahead of time and puts guys in a position to score. ... He's going to be extremely fun to play with and a guy I'm looking forward to playing with.”
