Minnesota Timberwolves in no hurry to sign a new head coach - NBA Report
Things seem to have really slowed down during the NBA lockout and the teams as well as the players are taking their time to make well thought out decisions. The players are deliberating foreign moves, whereas the teams are pondering
over the right changes that need to be made to their roster and the management staff.
Ever since the offseason began, teams like the Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves had been looking to revamp their system by bringing in new coaches. The Warriors, Lakers and
the Nuggets have already signed up Mark Jackson, Mike Brown and Lawrence Frank respectively. The Wolves, however, are taking their time and not rushing things.
Currently, the lockout situation is at a standstill and there are no real signs of it getting resolved anytime soon. Hence, the Wolves are utilizing this extra time to hire their new coach. It is reported that they have shortlisted
the candidates and will try to make the final decision as soon as they figure out the right candidate. Given the previous history of their GM David Kahn, one can bet that the figuring out process will take some time.
There were six candidates who were initially interviewed for the position and according to hearsay; the Wolves are trying to arrange a meeting between former Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman and the club executives including
Rob Moor, David Kahn and Glen Taylor. Besides them, other minority partners and personnel are also expected to be present as well.
Although Adelman seems to be the outright favourite candidate, it is expected that if he declines the offer or things do not work out between the two parties, the Wolves will move towards either Don Nelson or Sam Mitchell.
It is being said that Adelman is a long shot for the Wolves, especially if he strictly offered a coaching position with a General Manager already in place. This is because Adelman has expressed interest in being part of the personnel
at the club and is on the lookout for managerial vacancies.
Given the Wolves have no vacancies in the managerial department, the move might fall apart. However, if Adelman does join the club as a coach, it will go a long way in the rebuilding process of a depleted Wolves side. Not to mention
the benefits that the organization will accrue out of it, especially in terms of their image and style of play.
Even if the move does not go through, the other choices that are present are relatively decent as well. Sam Mitchell is a decent pick as well as he once won the coach of the year award and has had a history with Minnesota as well.
Don Nelson is also a worthy candidate, except that he has had a bad disciplinary record and a rather old school style of coaching, one that might not go down well with a young Wolves team.
Either way, a new coach will be hired and things surely cannot get worse than last season. Hence, the Minnesota fans ought to be optimistic about the future rather than anything else.
