Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor looking for a successor - NBA Update
Glen Taylor, the 71 year old Minnesota Timberwolves owner, has announced that he is looking for a successor to take over the team from him. Talking to Associated Press, Taylor recently revealed that he is interested in selling
some of the franchise shares to the interested group, with the long term view of that party eventually buying out the franchise from him.
The billionaire who is the biggest reason why the Wolves are still in Twin Cities however made it very clear, that he will only deal with a party which will keep the franchise in Minnesota;
“I could find somebody to buy the team. That's not my problem," Taylor said. "I have to find someone that's committed to here. It's always best if it would be a Minnesotan. I'm telling you I don't know that's the way it's going
to work out. I haven't had a lot of Minnesotans step up."
The former Republican senator became the messiah of Minnesota hopes after buying the franchise in 1994, when the club was about to be moved to New Orleans. He is however old and the question of his successor has been looming large
for quite some time.
“If something would happen to me in the sense of illness or if I die, then something's in place," Taylor said. "I have let that be known and I'm going to talk to some people about that."
This transition will not be a rapid one as he wants to see the improvement in team. The Wolves have had it tough for some time now and they have not made it to the playoffs since 2004. After two miserable seasons, the Wolves finally
started kicking this season. They brought in Rick Adelman as the head coach and with the arrival of Spanish sensation Ricky Rubio, thing started to look rosy and at one time, the Wolves were in strong contention for the playoffs.
However, with the injury of Rubio, the entire burden fell on Kevin Love again and the Wolves started to stumble. Love’s concussion deep in the season was the final nail in the coffin. However a low ranking in the season means that
the Wolves will again be in contention for a strong pick. Also, they have enough room in the salary cap and are sure to shop for some good players in the free agency.
A stronger team will eventually make the Timberwolves more enticing for the buyers. Moreover to make the franchise more appealing Taylor is planning to approach the state’s lawmaker for the renovation of Target Center, home to
the Wolves.
