Minnesota Timberwolves pick Derrick Williams looking to pursue overseas opportunities – NBA News
Derrick William’s decision to go pro is not proving to be a timely one.
Not because he is off the cuff for the big stage, but for the reason that NBA is not ready yet to start the next season proceedings, courtesy of the lockout.
However, Derrick already has a plan B in mind and if the regular season gets affected, Derrick will not hesitate in switching to his backup plan. This plan B is nothing different from those of other NBA players.
Derrick has made it very clear; that he will be flying overseas to sign with a professional team if the deadlock does not end in a week or so;
"I'm really going to be looking into it, I think that's the Plan B, especially at this point" Williams told GoAZCats.com, a website that covers University of Arizona sports.
The 6 ft 8 power forward has an excellent record at college level. As a freshman, in the University of Arizona, Williams averaged 15.7 points per game and was honoured as the ‘All American and the pac-10 freshman of the year.
However, he rose to prominence in his sophomore year after he ended with an outstanding average of 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. That year, Derrick helped the Wildcats into the Elite eight of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament.
At the end of that journey, Williams made himself available for the NBA draft and was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves at number two.
"Everybody wants to be a top pick in the (NBA) draft, so I have no regrets about leaving," Williams told GoAZCats.com.
So far, Williams has spent the extended offseason playing exhibition matches with other prominent NBA player in order to stay fit. Being a rookie has been difficult experience for Williams. He does not have a contract as yet, neither is he the part of the National Basketball Players union or NBPA which has been negotiating with the NBA owners since the lockout began on 1st July, 2011.
Emerging players need grooming and competitive environment so that they can enhance their skill before making a transition in NBA. However with the cancellation of summer league, rookie transition camp, NBA training camps and pre season games, the case has been completely opposite.
The frustration is now leading Williams to explore the foreign markets.
