Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Ricky Rubio to have surgery on left knee this Wednesday – NBA Update
Minnesota Timberwolves rookie point guard Ricky Rubio is all set to undergo a surgical procedure to repair his injured left knee this Wednesday, the team announced on Friday.
Rubio had torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) last week in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers after he bumped his left knee with Kobe Bryant in an attempt to help on the defense near the three point line. He immediately
clutched his knee and had to be helped off the court by teammates Martell Webster and Derrick Williams. An MRI scan next day, revealed the severity of the injury, one that generally takes about 9 months to heal completely.
The injury has dealt a serious blow to the playoff chances of the Timberwolves and all of a sudden, they have got to find 10.6 points, 8.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals and loads of energy from another source.
The Timberwolves were 21-21 and at the eighth spot in the Western Conference when Rubio left, and have since lost 3 of the 4 on a 7 game road trip with games against the Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio
Spurs still to come.
Timberwolves however are not the only one who will feel the pinch of this abrupt injury. The injury has also ruled out Rubio from the 2012 London Olympics as a part of the Spanish team and Rick Adelman, the Wolves coach said he
feels for the young point guard;
"I feel for him with the summer coming up and everything else, but I have no doubts. If there's anyone who will do everything he can do to get back, he will," Adelman said.
At the same time, the franchise is expecting that Rubio will be back when the next regular season starts later this year. David Kahn, the franchise general manager said last week;
"His competiveness knows no bounds. His work ethic knows no bounds. If ever there was a player that was ticketed to have not just a full recovery but to come back better than ever, stronger, it's Ricky Rubio," Kahn said last week.
"I have no doubt that come next season he'll be back better than ever."
For now though, the Wolves will hoping that his surgery is a success and that the team learns quickly to adapt to his absence.
