Minnesota Timberwolves to discuss head coaching position with Rick Adelman – NBA Report
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been on the hunt for a new head coach, throughout the summer. With the lockout in effect, they have been able to buy more time and make a more informed decision. After interviewing seven top candidates,
the Wolves seem to have shortlisted former Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman, as their top pick.
The two parties are expected to meet each other in Minneapolis on Tuesday to discuss the head coaching position with each other. Rick has had contact with Wolves general manager David Kahn before and this latest meeting is an indication
that Adelman too is interested in the position on offer.
Adelman left as head coach of the Houston Rockets at the end of last season. Soon after, the Minnesota Timberwolves fired head coach Kurt Rambis. As the hunt for a new coach began, the Wolves immediately prioritized Adelman.
Amongst the candidates who applied for the position, two other big names in Don Nelson and Larry Brown are also still in contention for the spot. Don Nelson is the former Golden State Warriors coach who has 1,335 league wins under
his belt and has been voted NBA Coach of the Year three times in his career so far.
Larry Brown also has an impressive record to match. He has won 1,275 games in his coaching career and most importantly led the Detroit Pistons to the NBA Championship in 2004. Apart from the above two, other interviewed candidates
include Terry Porter, Mike Woodson and Bernie Bickerstaff.
The Timberwolves had a dismal season last time around where they finished bottom of the league with a 17-65 record. With regards to talent, there is plenty in the Minnesota ranks. Some of them include the All Star power forward
Kevin Love, former number two pick Michael Beasley and current number two pick Derrick Williams.
The team is relatively young, except Luke Ridnour, who is their oldest player at the age of 30. The much awaited introduction of Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio is also expected in the upcoming season. Things can only get better
for the Wolves from here on in.
Things indeed look bright for the club, especially if Adelman accept the role being offered to him. He has considerable experience under his belt to revive a presently dead Minnesota team. In his 20 years of coaching he has held
a record of 945-616.
However, the major concern for David Kahn would be the fact that Adelman recently stated that he wanted a break from basketball and was looking to sit out the next season, provided the lockout ends in time and the season does go
through. A clearer picture shall be revealed once the parties meet on Tuesday.
