Minnesota Twins’ Joe Mauer not bothered by knee injections – MLB News
It seems that the Minnesota Twins’ cather Joe Mauer has been receiving knee injections following a recent surgery on his right knee.
Many experts have speculated that these injections may be an indication that the surgery was not as successful as Mauer and the Twins are letting on. However, Mauer was quick to deny that and stated that the shots were just for lubricating the knee after
such a surgery. He also went on to comment that the shots in no way will hamper his performance during the spring workout sessions.
Mauer stated that the shots were planned as part of his treatment following surgery that he had in mid-December. Mauer refused to consider it serious for his fitness and said, "I was surprised that it was out there. Usually a lot of these things happen and
you never know about it. But nothing set me back or anything like that. It was part of the plan, and [I'm] just working my way back."
The 27-year-old catcher stated that he accepted the injection just because of preventive measures and he feels it is good to take care of himself for better performance. According to Mauer, he received first shot of four injections prescribed for 2011 series
by the doctor. He will be injected once a week.
"It's pretty common," Mauer said of the shots. "A lot of athletes have them. I guess being a catcher and all that stuff, it might sound a lot worse than what it is."
Mauer has been a part of the spring workout sessions and seems to be in good physical condition. It looks as if the surgery has done him some good and that the injury in his knew has now subsided. The team will be very happy that Mauer is back and in spring
training with the rest of his team-mates. The Twins are looking for a good performance from Mauer during the spring workout sessions to gauge his fitness level for the grueling regular season.
It will be interesting to see how Mauer works his way back to complete fitness and what type of impact he will have for the Twins during the regular season. The Twins will be looking to decide on whether or not to keep Mauer in the position of catcher, as
his knee injury could very easily flair up again and affect his performance.
Many fans and experts are critical of the Twins use of Mauer behind the plate in the catchers position, as he has a tremendous batting talent that may get hampered by long innings crouched down. It is this same position which aggravated his knee and the
Twins will be looking into possibly moving him from behind the plate to another position on the field.
