Minnesota Twins all set to add Mike Pelfrey to the starting rotation- MLB News
It has been reported that the Minnesota Twins and right-handed pitcher Mike Pelfrey have agreed to a one-year deal worth $4 million with an additional $1.5 million in incentives based on performance. The deal has yet to be signed and announced by the Twins.
Pelfrey, who is a starting pitcher, has been playing in the Major League for seven seasons now and has thus far only represented the New York Mets. His best year in the Majors so far has been 2010, during whcih he posted a 15-9 winning record in 34 games,
33 of them as a starting pitcher, with a 3.66 ERA.
Mike started out well during the 2012 season, posting a 2.29 ERA in three games as a starting pitcher before having a Tommy John Surgery in early May on his right elbow, which brought his season to an end. He became a free agent after the Mets non-tendered
him.
Pelfrey was a first round pick during the 2005 Amateur Draft by the New York Mets. The 28-year-old so far has a 50-54 win-loss record in the Majors and has a 4.36 career ERA. He has also made a lone save as a pitcher in 2010.
Pelfrey is expected to join a rotation that at the moment has Scott Diamond and Kevin Correia already pencilled in. Vance Worley, who was acquired by the Twins in a recent trade, is also expected to make the cut for the starting rotation.
After the Correia signing, Terry Ryan, the Minnesota Twins general manager, had hinted that they will be signing more pitchers to their lineup. The ball club had struggled with pitchers in 2012 as several dependable names were unable to play the full season
due to injury troubles.
Mike Pelfrey is a pitcher with loads of unfulfilled potential and coming of a Tommy John Surgery, he has got a good chance to make a strong comeback into the Majors.
With the Twins pitching department facing fitness issues, Mike should be getting a significant number of games as a starting pitcher and can cement himself in the Twins organisation on the back of a strong performance in 2013.
