Minnesota Twins beat Cleveland Indians 5-1 to complete series sweep – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins completed a stunning series sweep on Sunday, July 29 as they outclassed the Cleveland Indians 5-1 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Justin Morneau once again played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he hit a two run home-run to right-centre in the fourth inning to put the Twins 2-1 ahead.
Ben Revere also made useful contribution with the bat driving in crucial runs in the fifth and the seventh. Revere score on a wild pitch and then singled to centre to give his side complete control of the situation.
Twins’ starting pitcher Brian Duensing won for the second time this season after he gave up just five hits and a run in six innings, lowering his ERA to 4.53. Relief pitchers Alex Burnett, Jared Burton and Glen Perkins pitched three scoreless innings to
hold off the Indians.
"He said, 'Yeah,' and asked if I was OK with it," Duensing said. "I'm not going to say no. I'd like to be a starter, but I don't feel like I'm in a spot to go in there and demand it or anything."
"I think he kind of likes that: not preparing and just going out there and throwing the ball," Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I think he enjoyed that part of it. He did a really nice job."
The Twins humiliated the Indians 11-0 in series opener and they carried over the momentum into Game 2 for another huge 12-5 win. Taking complete advantage of their home conditions, Ron Gardenhire and company put up another masterful performance on Sunday
evening to improve their record to 43-58.
"We came in here with high hopes to keep it going, and it wasn't that way. We couldn't do anything," Indians’ starter Ubaldo Jimenez said.
Despite their triumph over Cleveland, the Twins are still 15 games behind the .500 win percentage and it will be interesting to see if they can end the season on a strong note to salvage some of their lost pride.
