Minnesota Twins beat Cleveland Indians 5-3 at the Progressive Field – MLB news
Minnesota Twins beat the Cleveland Indians 5-3 on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at the Progressive Field as they had to call pitcher Pedro Hernandez from the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings for a single game.
The pitcher did not disappoint as he threw down five pitches, surrendering just two runs and recording his third win of the season.
Catcher Ryan Doumit admired the pitcher for his efforts who barely caught any sleep before the game and had to travel by road to get to the team in time.
“He had a long day yesterday and the start kind of snuck up on him. But he settled in nicely,” Doumit said.
Ron Gardenhire, the manager for the Twins, said that he was unsure how the things will go with Pedro who had walked a few to get the bases loaded at one point in time. He said that the team was hoping that he will be able to pitch some innings and he was
pretty good in the five he threw down.
“We didn't know how it was going to turn out in the first few innings, when he walked the bases loaded. We were just hoping he'd give us some innings more than anything else. He got through five pretty good,” Gardenhire said.
It would have been trouble for the bullpen had they been called upon earlier. In the previous game, they threw all but two pitches during the ballgame.
The pitcher himself realised that it was his opportunity to grab. Pedro sad that he felt tired in the first couple of innings but later saw it as an opportunity that he needed to grab with both hands.
“The first and second innings, I [felt] a little tired,” said Hernandez. “After the third inning, I said, 'Come on. Let's go. This is my opportunity. I want to do my best right now.'“
Apart from the pitching, the batting line-up also did well and was able to put runs on board regularly to stay on top.
Scoring started in the first innings for the Twins as Josh Willingham with an RBI single. The Indians were able to get two runs, one each in the second and third innings to take the lead. A two-run fifth innings, however, put the Twins back in control. Oswaldo
Arcia and Trevor Plouffe were both able to bat in a run each.
Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia both got another RBI each, bringing their tally to two apiece for the night. Glen Perkins recorded his 19th save of the season.
It was a good win for the Twins who were able to come on top despite serious pitching related issues. They will like to carry forward in the same manner in the coming games and post some great wins.
