Minnesota Twins beaten by Kansas City Royals 3-4 at Target Field – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins were beaten by the Kansas City Royals 3-4 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Friday, June 29 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
After the Royals took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning but Ryan Doumit singled to left-centre to bring the Twins back into the contest. Kansas City had three run lead going into the ninth inning but Joe Mauer doubled to left to add spice to the proceedings.
Josh Willingham grounded out to short-stop to reduce Royals lead to 3-4.
Royals’ starting pitcher Luis Mendoza allowed just one run in career high eight innings and Salvador Perez homered to lift them to a deserving victory.
"I'm just glad to stay longer," Mendoza said. "It was my first time going eight innings in the big leagues. I just tried to keep going."
"We gave ourselves a chance at the end. We just needed another big hit and we were short," Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire said.
"We just need to keep pushing," third baseman Mike Moustakas said. "It's a big series here and we need to stay consistent."
The Twins have looked completely out of sorts at Target Field since the start of the season. The loss to the Royals on Friday evening was their 25th in front of their home crowd and Manager Ron Gardenhire is the one who should take the blame.
Considering the fact the Twins have some of the best hitting and pitching talent in their squad, the fans had great expectations from this team. However, despite spending a considerable amount of money during the offseason, they are far from getting the
results they wanted.
With just four wins in their last ten games, the Twins are certainly not helping themselves. Their chances of making it to the playoffs are, unfortunately, very low as they sit at the bottom of the American League Central Division standings table. It will
be interesting to see if Gardenhire and company can regroup themselves before the next game to salvage some of their lost pride.
