Minnesota Twins beaten by Seattle Mariners 2-5 – MLB Update
Minnesota Twins lost to the Seattle Mariners 2-5 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Tuesday, August 28 in second game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Manager Ron Gardenhire will be very upset with what he has seen from the Twins this season. With so many big names playing for Minnesota, the fans had great expectations from this team. Twins’ ordinary 52-77 record tells the entire story.
Starting pitcher Scott Diamond, who has produced a number of match winning performances this season, could not come up with his best effort on Tuesday as he gave up seven hits and five runs in a low scoring game.
Ben Revere hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the third and Ryan Doumit doubled to left in the bottom of the ninth. Relief pitchers Kyle Waldrop and Alex Burnett combined to pitch two scoreless innings but Seattle was too hot to handle as they held on to their
lead comfortably to complete a comprehensive victory.
"Ever since the All-Star break, I feel like we've been hitting more consistently," said Dustin Ackley, who hit a grand slam for the Mariners. "We've had a couple games where we might not have scored as many as we like, but overall I feel like our hitting
has been great."
"I think after we had a couple of those winning streaks and started hitting real well I think it was in everybody's mind," Ackley said of reaching the .500 mark. "I think the more we won the more we believed that we could do that."
Mariners had the better of their opponents in the series opener as well and they continued the good work in Game 2 to take an impassable 2-0 series lead. It will be interesting to see if the Mariners can give similar results in their next two games to earn
a rare series sweep at Target Field.
Twins, on the other hand, once again failed to make the most of scoring opportunities and eventually paid the price. Their batting line-up, in particular, failed to match Mariners’ offence.
Seattle will definitely be happy with their performance as they managed to dominate Minnesota and take a comfortable lead in the series.
