Minnesota Twins’ catcher Joe Mauer receives treatment for injured knee at Spring Training
The Minnesota Twins’ catcher Joe Mauer has recently received treatment on his injured knee as he regains his fitness in Spring Training. The star will probably not start his campaign on the road to the 2011 Major League Baseball season, as the club’s Grapefruit
League kicks off on Sunday.
The Twins reported through Manager Ron Gardenhire that the player recently received a shot on his surgically repaired left knee that needed lubrication. The club is not placing any pressure on the catcher, as they are trying to put more emphasis on his return
to fitness without haste. The team will take a slow approach to put the All–Star back in the squad.
"I want to make sure those things take effect," Gardenhire said of the shot. "He's feeling a lot better. You can see him moving and feeling great and we want to keep it that way. So we're going to kind of guard him and back him off, and we'll eventually
get him in the ballgames, too."
Mauer has been taking an active part in the daily workout regiment since his arrival at Fort Myers in Florida. The player made his way to the club field last week on Thursday. The club is putting him in a limited catcher’s position for a while, as there
are no plans to put him in the complete role for the full-squad workouts.
Gardenhire said, "I'm not thinking that he's going to be catching in the games right away, either. It's more important for him to see the pitchers on the side, a few bullpens on the side, but I want to make sure we clean that knee up before we get anything
going."
It will be interest to see how Mauer manages his workout time without putting pressure on his injured knee. The Twins’ will be hoping that his injury clears up in time for the regular season, as his contribution to the team is significant. The fans will
be looking to see if Mauer is ready and healthy, giving them something to cheer about.
