Minnesota Twins claim Field and Roenicke, out-right Casilla and Deduno - MLB News
Infielder Tommy Field and relieving pitcher Josh Roenicke were claimed by the Minnesota Twins off waivers from the Colorado Rockies. On the other hand, the team also out-righted Samuel Deduno to Triple-A Rochester and taking him off the roster. Infielder
Alexi Casilla was claimed off waivers by Baltimore Orioles.
Alexi Casilla played 106 games in the 2012 regular season for the Minnesota Twins. He hit a single home-run with a batting average of .241 and batted in 33 runs. The 28-year-old has been a part of the Twins for seven seasons and has had limited playing opportunities
over the years. 2012 was the busiest playing year for the right-hander in his Major League career. In the 515 career games for the Twins, Alexi has had a batting average of .250 and an on-base percentage of .305.
Casilla can cash on the Orioles’ second base dilemma. His .980 fielding average will certainly do a lot of good to his cause. Brian Roberts only played 17 games in 2012 and given he had hip surgery, there is no certainty on his fitness timeline. With Ryan
Flaherty showing good progress and Robert Andino having some good moments, a starting line-up spot may not be guaranteed and a decent opportunity is there to be had, to say the least.
Tommy Field has so far has not had many opportunities in his two years in the Major League. In the entire 2012 season, he managed to play two games for the Rockies adding to the 16 he played in 2011 for the same club. The 25-year-old played 121 games for
the Triple-A Colorado Springs. He hit eight home-runs, with 49 RBI’s and had a batting average of .246. His on-base percentage was .315.
The 30-year-old Roenicke made 63 appearances for the Rockies in 2012. In nearly 89 innings, he struck-out 54 and walked 43. He posted an ERA of 3.25. In his career, which spans over five seasons, the right-hander has a 4.09 ERA. Josh comes from a family
of baseball players. He is nephew of Ron Roenicke, the Milwaukee Brewers’ manager. His father also played Major League Baseball.
Samuel Deduno has played in three Major League seasons, representing a different team in each season. The Dominican pitcher had a 6-5 winning record in the 15 matches that he played, all of them as a starting pitcher. He had a 4.44 ERA in 2012.
It will be interesting to see the final look of the Twins’ roster. Like many other teams, they are making quite a few changes to their line-up. Some quarters have suggested that the Twins may be interested in the Los Angeles Angels’ starting pitcher Dan
Haren.
It could be an interesting move as Dan has been performing quite well and can help them overcome the short comings in the pitching department. Only time will tell if they make all the right moves to their roster.
